Celebrate Your Anniversary In Style

A couple of years ago my in-laws had their 50th Wedding Anniversary. By some standards it was a simple affair, just family and friends getting together for an evening of remembering and celebrating a very special marriage and the happiness that came from it.
But when that marriage produced nine children, 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, then it became something worth shouting about! I wish you could have seen all the excitement in getting ready for the big event. Anniversary presents were bought, a lovely anniversary cake was ordered and the church was decorated with flowers and all the trimmings for the big party to celebrate 50 years together. The highlight of the evening was the music, with my aunt singing the same song she sang at her sister's wedding reception 50 years before, and all nine children doing a performance of a historical song and skit they had put on when they were kids, for a PTA program their mom had "volunteered" them for. It was so funny! The night was a special one for my mother-in-law who had looked forward to it for years. I'm so glad she has those memories as she is now a widow.
So when anniversary time rolls around, get out and celebrate. Do it up big and party till the cows come home.

I get invited to a lot of baby showers. It is always fun to take something a little different than the standard layette sets, bags of diapers or packages of tiny socks. I'm always looking for cute clothing or special gifts I can buy ahead and hang protected in my closet until the next shower date arrives. When I was talking with my sister-in-law a few months ago, she told me my nephew had been married at Disneyland in a beautiful ceremony complete with Cinderella's coach and all the trimmings as only Disney could do. That got me to thinking... surely Disneyworld in Orlando must do weddings also.

Even A Mom Has Her Dreams

I may be an almost 50 year old mom of many, but I used to be a spring chicken. In my younger years I was fascinated with the beautiful harem girls and princesses of the wonderful old Hollywood movies like The Sheik, Road To Morocco and The Thief Of Bagdad, and one of my secret dreams was to learn how to belly dance. That's back when I had a shapely belly!
Many classic movies and romance novels later, I still find it a lovely dance art but I'd rather watch a movie with my bowl of popcorn than learn to gyrate correctly myself.

Did you know?
The costume now associated with this dance is called the bedlah in Arabic (meaning "suit"), and was adopted by dancers in Egypt in the 1930. (as per wikipedia) Traditional dress for the dance included more covering of the body. The western costume we think of today is not traditional at all! But it sure is a lot of fun.

When A New Baby Is On The Way

I was talking with my son last week and he informed me that he and his wife are thinking about adding baby #2 to their family. Of course that is exciting for us as grandparents! We love our little granddaughter very much and think she would be a great big sister.

Being a young Dad or Mom is not easy. But they really enjoy being parents. Little do they realize that becoming parents again is nothing like the first time around however. Now they have their first bundle of joy to care for in addition to going through the nausea months and sleepless nights of a newborn. It will be fun to see them rise to the challenge. I was watching t.v. this afternoon and an ad came on for Grandparents.com. It advertised 101 things a Grandparent can do with grandkids, so I checked out the site. There are a lot of ads to wade through but also some great info. The 101 things for grandparents has a dropdown so you can pick the city nearest you and look for cool activities and places to visit right where you live.
I picked Baltimore, the biggest city in our area and was pleased to find a place called Amazing Glaze where kids can paint pottery for firing. Also stores like aMuse Toys and Build A Bear Workshop. Best of all were the museums, some of which I'd never heard of before: Baltimore Museum of Industry, Baltimore Public Works Museum, Baltimore Streetcar Museum, Babe Ruth Birthplace and Official Orioles Museum. And that is just a few.
Certainly there is plenty to do in Baltimore for a Grandma and her grandkids. And you just might want to bring Grandpa along too.
So check out your closest city and see what's brewing. You're bound to find something to do when Grandma comes to visit. Just give her a list of fun places to go, a GPS, and a cool new Grandma t-shirt to wear while she's with you.

Here's a fun Halloween recipe using Ritz crackers that you can stir up and serve your friends when they stop by on Halloween night with their kids.

Easy Halloween Cookies

1 (12-ounce) bag white chocolate chips
1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
Ritz crackers
Creamy or crunchy peanut butter
Orange candy sprinkles

1. In small, heavy saucepan melt chocolate and shortening together over low heat, stirring until smooth.
2. Make sandwich cookies out of the Ritz crackers using peanut butter for the filling.
3. Dip each cookie into the melted chocolate mixture and place on waxed paper. Sprinkle with the orange candy sprinkles. Allow to dry at room temperature.
Store in an air tight container at room temperature.

When my kids were little, every year about a week before Thanksgiving we would make a "family thankful turkey" out of a large soup can, covering it with brown construction paper and gluing colored feathers on for a tail. Two boogly eyes finished it off. Then I would pass out little slips of paper and all the kids would write down three things they were thankful for that year. The papers would be tucked inside our cute little turkey.
On Thanksgiving Day, we would pull the slips of paper out and read all the things our family was thankful for before we started eating our Thanksgiving feast.
